Fan Report: Alexander Rybak at the Stille Natt Hellige Natt concert at Fagerborg

A very special Christmas gift…

As 2018’s “Stille Natt Hellige Natt” tour came to it’s final concert in Fagerborg Church, Petra Maczewski from Varel in the northwest of Germany was present at her very first experience of seeing Alexander perform live. Here’s her story…

It’s almost already one week now since I’ve returned from Oslo and still it all seems like a dream. It had all been planned for so long, I had already booked the flights in June and on the same day bought tickets for “Stille Natt, Hellige Natt”. It would be the first time I would see Alexander Rybak live and when my husband said he could imagine spending Christmas in Oslo and going to the concert, I was beyond excited! For 30 years, the “Mother of all Christmas concerts” has travelled around to churches with professional artists to sing the Christmas message and unify the religious festival and joy. Rune Larsen has been a part of this for 17 years in a row, and once again he realised that he and the rest of the singers and musicians had come to the favourite church of all – Grorud Church. 30 YEARS ago, the producer Tore Arne Ranghus had an idea.In short, this idea was about organising church concerts in the pre-Christmas time. But to succeed one hundred percent with this he had to bring with him a bunch of well-known artists. The first gang of the “Stille Natt Heilige Natt” concert was Anita Skogan, Karoline Krüger, Nora Brockstedt and Karstein Isachsen. Since that time, more than 500,000 people have settled in front of a tour team with stage performers who have come and gone, where our own Maria Haukaas Mittet is in her fourth season of Ranghus’ team. Alexander Rybak, Marian Aas Hansen and Rune Larsen – Interview on Radio Sør, Norway 29.11.2016

Radio interview (video)  and article with Alexander, Marian and Rune from Stille Natt Hellige Natt

Finally Alexander Rybak is “just” a violinist

Source: krs.247.no  Text and photo by Glenn Th. Faannessen

There are many elements to grab when Rune Larsen, Marian Aas Hansen and Alexander Rybak are among the players. Tore Endresen is missed a lot, but the MGP-stamp Rybak is not particularly missed by the violinist Rybak.

– After something settled as Grand Prix,  it’s hard to tear yourself out of a bubble that the media has created. Here I can actually be a violinist. I do not feel that I have to meet the expectations by putting on a white shirt and vest and do exactly the same things, says Rybak to KRS247.

– And Rune is not Lollipop-Rune, either.

– That’s absolutely right. Those who expect Lollipop will be disappointed. This is something else. When Alexander plays his violin numbers every night there is a tremendous response to it. It says something about our concert that we can have a sing-along with the audience, artistic touches as Alexander stands for, says Larsen before he is interrupted.

– And the humour with Rune, Rybak shoots in.

– I’m a bit of a joker, Larsen confirms joyfully.

Marian Aas Hansen believes that the audiences who come back year after year, have their expectations that should be met.

– We have an audience who come year after year because they get what they expect plus they get surprises.  It is about keeping some of the essence of “Stille Natt” and Christmas but also to renew, says Aas Hansen.

Anni Jowett’s Christmas concert report from Bergen 2015

Basic RGB

Oh, the weather outside was frightful,
but the company was so delightful.
And since we had some place to go
Let it go! Let it go, Let it go.

When we finally say goodnight,
How I’ll hate going out in the storm!
But, as he really hugged me tight,
All the way home I felt warm!

Now the tour bus is loudly revving,
me and dear Marian are still good-by-ing.
But, as long I love Stille Natt
I will go! I will go! I will go!

Oh, rain didn’t show signs of stopping,
So we caught some crabs for cooking
The lights are turned way down low,
Candles glow! Koselig Tid! Candles glow! Continue reading Anni Jowett’s Christmas concert report from Bergen 2015

6. December – Virtuoso Variations – Alexander Rybak

Virtuoso variations played by Alexander Rybak

“In expressing authenticity, Alexander Rybak was an important partner. He is a classically trained violinist of high calibre. This he demonstrated by his performance of his own composition, “Julevariasjoner” (Christmas variations) built over the song “Vi tenner våre lykter” (We light our lanterns), from the TV series “Jul I Skomakergata” (Christmas in Shoemaker street). Here he shows his virtuosity to the fullest. With a wide use of double grips, and other technical finesses, he carries the simple melody into several classical stylistic expressions.”

Christmas mood a la Larsen

Early Friday night the Christmas concert “Stille Natt Hellige Natt” was back at the Immanuel church in Halden. There, an unusually packed church waited for Rune Larsen & Co.
Some will say that Larsen is perfecting his team when he takes to the road with his Christmas ensemble, consisting of Tor Endresen, Elisabeth Bettan Andreassen, Marian Aas Hansen and Alexander Rybak. The last one of course still equipped with his well acclaimed violin.

It was the violin  virtuoso Alexander Rybak who got the biggest hold on the audience`s heart during the Christmas concert at Tønsberg cathedral last night.

The applause was never ending after his Norwegian/Belorussian Version of “ Vi Tenner Våre Lykter”. The 27 year old winner of the Eurovision Song Contest will soon top our national hero Arve Tellefsen.

An evening for emotions

Christmas has been called a magnifying glass. The joy gets bigger but so does the sorrow, said Rune Larsen when he created the Christmas mood for a sold out Trinity Church.

The church seats are seldom more packed with the exception of Christmas Eve. This is also true for the Trinity Church in Arendal last night. The audience filled up the gallery too and extra chairs had to be placed in the church. Continue reading Review of the Christmas concert with Alexander Rybak in Arendal, Norway.

The calm before the storm

A peaceful Christmas concert with great musical range.

The frozen wind swept souls that blew into the cathedral on Wednesday night found a quiet moment to laugh at life’s storms.
Molde, Norway: Rune Larsen, Elisabeth Andreassen, Marian Aas Hansen, Tor Endresen and Alexander Rybak performed both together and individually a solid pre-Christmas program, packed with well-known and beloved Christmas carols and spiced up with more unknown material. The approximate 500 attendees in the cathedral on this windswept pre-Christmas night would hardly regret this visit.

Great voices in full church

Thursday evening, Halden and Immanuels church was visited by the finest Christmas-concert-veterans in the country. Something, a fully booked church knew how to appreciate.

The influx of people who want musical help, to get in the right Christmas-mood, is apparently significant. It was said, that there were more than 900 on the pews and that people had come all the way from Oslo to fill up the last seats. The Bergen-native Rune Larsen, is among those who have made Christmas-concerts of the most spectacular kind for the longest time and thus, this year’s version of “Stille Natt, Hellige Natt” is actually a 25-year anniversary.

Light a hope for Christmas

It’s unbelievable that you’d get goosebumps from hearing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at a church and at the same time get in a Christmas mood. By hearing Tor Endresen’s interpretation of it during the Christmas concert in Grimstad it provided a great beginning of a beautiful and powerful experience.

“Silent Night, Holy Night” is probably Norway’s most famous travelling Christmas concert, and the mood was set already when Alexander Rybak started playing the violin during the performance of Glade Jul (Silent Night). For 25 years different artists have filled churches all over the country under the title “Silent Night, Holy Night” like last night at Grimstad church.

The new Christmas star

For 25 years, the “Silent Night, Holy Night” have toured Norway in the weeks before Christmas. With Alexander Rybak joining the team, it is quite possible they can stay on for another 25 years.

For the second time in three days, Kirkelandet church in Kristiansund was completely fully seated because of a touring pre-Christmas concert. On Sunday it was Hanne Krogh and her three tenors that was in action, yesterday we heard the more traditional “Silent Night, Holy Night,” that this year had grown from a quartet to a quintet.
