An evening for emotions
– Christmas has been called a magnifying glass. The joy gets bigger but so does the sorrow, said Rune Larsen when he created the Christmas mood for a sold out Trinity Church.

The calm before the storm
A peaceful Christmas concert with great musical range.

The frozen wind swept souls that blew into the cathedral on Wednesday night found a quiet moment to laugh at life’s storms.
Molde, Norway: Rune Larsen, Elisabeth Andreassen, Marian Aas Hansen, Tor Endresen and Alexander Rybak performed both together and individually a solid pre-Christmas program, packed with well-known and beloved Christmas carols and spiced up with more unknown material. The approximate 500 attendees in the cathedral on this windswept pre-Christmas night would hardly regret this visit.

Alexander Rybak – “Christmas Tales”
From Fairytale to Christmas music
Most of us know Alexander Rybak best as the boy, who brought home the gold in the Eurovision Song Contest. Some have also seen him in the talent-competition “Idol” and we have all, in some way or another, heard the song Fairytale. Now, he has put together a Christmas album, which has got the title “Christmas Tales”.
I for my part, got more than enough of this man in the Fairytale-time, but will try the best I can to review the album objective and with an open mind. My first thought about the album is that it is very much in Rybak-style and easy to recognize. It is clear that he has managed, to put his own touch to well-known Christmas songs.

Selina (10) and Anea Bråten (8) did not want to go to the Christmas concert. But that was before they heard that Alexander Rybak was coming.
-It was kind of strange to see him in person, since I have only ever seen him on TV, says Selina, who together with her sister was very pleased when, after the Christmas concert ‘Silent Night Holy Night’ in Tune church, had their picture with Rybak.
-He is very clever, and the concert was good. I have liked him for a long time. I didn’t want to go to the Christmas concert actually, but then Mom told me that Rybak was coming, Selina smiles.
In spite of the happiness she thought it was a little embarrassing to meet the star violinist.
-But it wasn’t scary. He was very kind, the 10 year old says.

Photo: The quintet, that filled Immanuels church yesterday evening: Alexander Rybak, Marian Aas Hansen, Tor Endresen, Elisabeth Andreassen and Rune Larsen. A performance which, also visually, showed the church in a stylish light.
Great voices in full church
Thursday evening, Halden and Immanuels church was visited by the finest Christmas-concert-veterans in the country. Something, a fully booked church knew how to appreciate.
The influx of people who want musical help, to get in the right Christmas-mood, is apparently significant. It was said, that there were more than 900 on the pews and that people had come all the way from Oslo to fill up the last seats. The Bergen-native Rune Larsen, is among those who have made Christmas-concerts of the most spectacular kind for the longest time and thus, this year’s version of “Stille Natt, Hellige Natt” is actually a 25-year anniversary.

I would like to participate in this kind of event every day, the whole year, Stephen Ackles said to the audience, who filled the Mission Church at Alværn to beyond bursting point on Sunday afternoon.

Rybak did not disappoint.
When Alexander Rybak went on stage in Bø church Thursday evening, the roof was almost lifted. It turned out to be a great free concert for the fans, as a way of consolation because he did not come before Christmas.
The popular artist, who won the ESC in 2009, is a conscientious, open, very nice and sympathetic boy. Rybak was sincerely sad because he didn’t manage to come to Bø before Christmas, to participate in the concert “Vinterbilder” [the journalist wrote “Vinterstemning”]. Therefore he came now.
– I had an encounter with a Russian bear, which stopped me from coming, he joked.
The choir school in Bø had their semester opening this evening, and all the 5 choirs in Bø were invited. They sang a little in the beginning.
– It was Alexander Rybak himself who took the initiative to come to Bø. He rang and asked if we had an event he could participate in, and he was willing to perform for free. We made this mini concert with all the 5 choirs, where Alexander got to be our special guest, the choir leaders Grete Sele and Rolf Akselsen Lie tell.
Alexander Rybak had a bad conscience for a concert he lost in Bø before Christmas. Yesterday 10.01.2012, he made up for it with a mini concert and half an hour of autograph writing

Good to have it done
A cancelled plane made Alexander Rybak miss a Christmas concert in Bø before Christmas. Last night he made up for it.
– It was sad to know that there was a town in Norway where I hadn’t completed my task, …I just had to do something about it,- Alexander said after yesterday’s mini concert in Bø church. Before Christmas he travelled around with Dennis Storhøi and Anne Vada with the concert tour Vinterbilder. Two weeks before Christmas, Bø was on the schedule, but when the artists came on stage, Rybak wasn’t there. Bad weather made him stuck in Munich.

Just before Christmas a lot of people managed to get into the right mood, thanks to the concert, “Winter Pictures”.
There is no shortage of concerts with commercial operators in the district. Yesterday’s concert could have fitted into the picture here. But fortunately it had the mark of originality and spontaneity, which made it well worth the visit.
Alexander Rybak stood for the spontaneity. He shifts constantly between being a funny kindergarten- uncle and a serious fiddler. All the time he communicated with his audience, well aware that everyone should catch everything, and everyone should feel seen. It’s a great quality that many experienced artists are missing. Hopefully, Rybak will never let go of his playfulness.
Originality was first and foremost in the arrangements. It was generally known and beloved Christmas songs that passed the show, and they were dressed in new “clothes” (arrangements) , thanks to musical director Øystein Lund Olafsen. Rybak improvised freely on “The Christmas Song”. Guitarist Kjell Harald Litangen came with a tough solo in “Himmel i min favn” (Heaven in my arms) and the pianist himself, did the work of the organ in a very free version of “Deilig er jorden” (Lovely is the earth). Here he whizzed through many keys, and was inspired by the moment. It was a real highlight, which told much about this man’s musicality.
Anne Vada appeared in everything as a solid singer, who does not miss a single key. Her expression is clear and very clean, and makes you lower the shoulders of many notches.
Actor Dennis Storhøi read texts and thus put an atmospheric setting for the Christmas celebration. The transitions of the songs were gradual, again thanks to the keyboard man.
The three main artists gave each their atmospheric picture of winter and Christmas. Anna Vada and Dennis Storhøi were here strong in words, and although Rybak could not live up to it, his image was not less evident because of that. Choosing a sing-along version of “Julekveldsvisa” (Christmas Eve song) was a genius move, in which he got the men in the audience to sing an octave higher than usual, and the ladies to sing at their lowest. To pinch the nose to mimic Prøysen’s voice, only Rybak can get away with.
It was this sense of humor combined with deeper lyrics, clear vocals and elegant music that made the concert a great experience. All this in a very beautiful color- set church-room, which was almost full.

It was people in all ages present this evening, and the whole church buzzed expectantly minutes before the concert was going to start.. The scene was suddenly illuminated, and in a red light the actor, radio voice, and film and TV face Dennis Storhøi come walking up the aisle.
