Based on his Classical education, graduating with the highest grade from the acclaimed Barratt Due Music Institute as a performing violinist, he has laid the foundation for being able to experiment in different music genres, and he does it with bravura. Be it jazz, pop, rap, reggae, funky rhythm, techno dance,  rock, Swedish folksongs, folk music, Slavic music, soundtracks .This versatility together with his enthusiasm and dreams has given him many opportunities to show his skills, in many different ways, like musicals, theatre, revue shows, orchestra seminars, TV and radio shows (both as guest and host), worldwide projects, collaborations with other artists, a music video for DreamWorks and even dancing. And his grand slam victory in ESC 2009, has made him a forever Eurovision star. He is a popular guest in national selections and has often been present at the big happening in May , as a guest, performer or even a reporter 🙂 Continue reading 23. It is very important to stay true to yearly traditions every Christmas. This includes listening to Christmas music, eating traditional holiday dishes, and spending time with our families. Alexander has performed this beautiful hymn every year ever since his Christmas tour in 2010, and so it has now become a valued tradition to listen to him perform this each year at his concerts.

“In expressing authenticity, Alexander Rybak was an important partner. He is a classically trained violinist of high calibre. This he demonstrated by his performance of his own composition, ‘Julevariasjoner’ (Christmas variations) built over the song ‘Vi tenner våre lykter’ (We light our lanterns), from the TV series ‘Jul I Skomakergata’ (Christmas in Shoemaker street). Here he shows his virtuosity to the fullest. With a wide use of double grips, and other technical finesses, he carries the simple melody into several classical stylistic expressions.”  Link to: Review in Fredrikstad Blad 10.12.2012 Continue reading 6. Alexander Rybak – “Christmas Tales”

From Fairytale to Christmas music

Most of us know Alexander Rybak best as the boy, who brought home the gold in the Eurovision Song Contest. Some have also seen him in the talent-competition “Idol” and we have all, in some way or another, heard the song Fairytale. Now, he has put together a Christmas album, which has got the title “Christmas Tales”.

I for my part, got more than enough of this man in the Fairytale-time, but will try the best I can to review the album objective and with an open mind. My first thought about the album is that it is very much in Rybak-style and easy to recognize. It is clear that he has managed, to put his own touch to well-known Christmas songs.

“New Year’s Tales” of Alexander Rybak.

After having performed with the unforgettable song “Fairytale” at “Eurovision-2009”, Alexander Rybak has won not only the competition but also the winning ticket to his bright creative future.

Since then the creativity of this guy – no matter what he did – resonates with the audience.

That happened also with the last album of the 26 year-singer, which consists entirely of traditional Christmas and New Year’s songs. The hits of Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, “Let it Snow” and “Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer” – all this acquires the new tone thanks to the fine taste of Rybak who once again put emphasis on violin and keyboards. Regarding sound, the album is maximally close to the music of the Christmas Masterpieces of Disney’s studios and the main highlight is the violin of course, because of that Rybak became famous in 2009. Since then the artist has recorded several songs in Russian, two albums in English and the one in Norwegian (*actually in Swedish – comment of facebookies.org).

After having realized the demand in the western market, the musician decided to return to the English language in which all 12 tracks are performed. Listening to him you are realizing that the singer obviously prefers to go down the “for a long time, already beaten path”, however he only benefits from this – the new album of Rybak is nice to listen to from the beginning to the end. Unfortunately there will be no concerts in Moscow as a part of the tour to support the album – the musician decided not to go beyond several halls in his native Norway.

Charming in big shoes

Alexander Rybak: “Christmas tales”

Dice 4 ( of 6 )

It is not rare, that the sound of Christmas is the sound of cash registers and clinking coins, performed by artists who see their chance to supplement their income by doing some quick Christmas concerts and/or releasing a Christmas album. Christmas albums can be both pleasant, annoying, and cozy, but rarely particularly important.

Alexander Rybak is sailing on a wave of success, talent, and a youthful belief in his own excellence, so it is not strange that he should also record a Christmas album! On “Christmas Tales” Rybak resorted to the oldest trick in the book for a Christmas album, which is to surf on the crooner-wave.

THE CHILDRENS FAVOURITE: Alexander Rybak has a very special appeal on children.

Found and translated by Tessa Lande. English revision by Annie Jowett.

Alexander – bachelor and fiddler – I want my own family

Alexander Rybak has an absolutely uncanny way of relating to children and capturing their attention. Now he dreams of his own family as well.

The thrill at Slattum School in Nittedal is to touch and feel. Alexander Rybak (26) is this year’s Christmas present for the violin-playing children in the 6th grade. And when the favourite appears, the cheering will not end.
The children throw themselves upon him, and with charm and musical wit Alexander takes the teacher role as a matter of course. The students spent the fall practising “Fairytale”, and Alexander gives his personal tips and advice to the children, who sit like lighted candles.

Alexander Rybak – Christmas tales

Alexander Rybak – Christmas tales

Grappa/Music co-operators

In a way it is not surprising,  Alexander Rybak takes on a bunch of the American ”pop”- Christmas songs. He has told us, both verbally and musically, that part of his heritage is from a tradition, which the gentlemen Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra helped to establish. This means we are served quite american versions of, among others, “The Christmas Song”, “Winter Wonderland”, “Let it Snow”, “I’ll be home for Christmas” and “Silent Night” with Rybak on both violin and vocals. The wrapping includes everything from big band to a lot of strings and good vocal help from the group Pust and I don’t doubt for one second, that Rybak is sincere about this.

Cozy fiddle Christmas

 Alexander Rybak, Christmas tales

Norwegian Grand Prix winners have done well in the Christmas- album business before, so it is probably only fair that a Rybak variant came along too. It is, not unexpectedly, the fiddle-playing that makes this album stand out a little,  from the now-overflowing basket of mediocre popversions of “played- to- death”- songs.

Rybak has a warm and charming style, and he never tries to “invent the traditions” of Christmas again.

Best track: “Let it snow”.

 The Christmas Album: jazz
Alexander Rybak
“Christmas Tales”
(Grappa)

Sober, but somewhat predictable choice.

“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire” is Alexander Rybak’s sonorous start on this CD, and the warm atmosphere of Mel Torn’s “The Christmas Song” runs through Rybak’s Christmas album with a heartwarming theme, where his two own new Christmas songs fit in with the rest.

Beyond this, the repertoire is really quite predictable and interpreted to death, but with Rybak and partners tapping into what might have been just another Christmas album with all the old American hits, through fine and soft string arrangements. Rybak himself has the same correct hesitation in his voice, making “Christmas Tales” into a Christmas album that will be a nice complement to the increasingly large family of Christmas albums.

Best song: “The Christmas Song”.

Stein Østbø
