New round with Alexander Rybak

Alexander is back as an instructor at Aalesund Orchestra School, and is more nervous than he was before Grand Prix.

“This is something totally new for me, because this time it’s my own project. It shapes my future”, Alexander Rybak (25) says.

“This is what I like to work with. To make concerts with children and young people which turns into unique experiences for the audience. It’s regardless of age and music tastes. A little pop, some classical and some folk songs”, he says.

He is back as an instructor at Aalesund Orchestra School after being absent last year. Back then his schedule was too tight. Young girls giggle when they see Rybak, murmuring that it was he who inspired them to start playing the violin. The boys are more blunt: “Is it fun to being millionaire?” one of them asks. Rybak simply smiles.

– Is it good to be back?

– It’s very good. The more I travel, the more I need the roots I actually have. And I’ve always felt a strong connection to Sunnmøre. There are more than enough of orchestra courses across the country, but most places are all so “safe” and equal, he says.

“But here in Aalesund we never play it “safe”. Here, it is insanity every year. Rybak is therefore invited back for life. He will always fit in”, Rune Bergmann says, the musician responsible for orchestra school.

“Rybak is not of a particular genre. He isn’t “either, or”. Rybak is music – no doubt. And it’s important that children and young people can see that. We do not always have to choose between country and Mozart. Sometimes it is possible to have both. When it comes to Rybak, it’s top quality either way”, Bergmann added. “Thank you”, Rybak replied.

Last night was the first meet-up between Rybak and this year’s participants of the summer school. Together on Wednesday, they will  create magic in the form of a concert at Gomerhuset in Skodje. Many of the participants have played with Rybak before. “He is clever because he is so varied. Which makes it more fun to play”, says Lene Larsgård (12) from Aalesund. And the Orchestra School is a great place to reunite with friends you met last year, according to Hilde Gunn Hana (14) from Molde.

Rybak also recognizes multiple faces.

“It’s always good to see that talent does not give up the fiddle for the benefit of tennis”, he said. “This is an important school for me. I did not think about becoming an instructor prior to receiving my first invitation from here. Being here helps me become more structured. I have so many ideas in my head all the time”, says Rybak.

“Do not worry about being structured. We have more than enough structured people. Just be Rybak”, says Bergmann.
