Alexander Rybak performed at the memorial concert for the people in Gjerdrum municipality in Norway.
On the night of December 30, people in Gjerdrum lost their loved ones and their homes. I have made a song about this countryside which I love so much, and I will sing it tonight amongst other songs.
We don’t pretend that playing some music will make everything fine again, but it moves me to see what the people in the community are doing for each other in these dark times.💪🏼💕🙏🏼”

The video playlist below contains Alexander’s performances of “Song from a Secret Garden” with Rolf Løvland and “Thank You” with Maiken Kroken. His new song “Mitt andre hjem” (My Second Home) will be added to the playlist as soon he has uploaded it to his YT-channel. The full TV-show can be viewed on NRK.no
Gjerdrum municipality, NRK (Norwegian Broadcaster) and the village’s own musician Knut-Bjørnar Asphol have been at the forefront of this memorial event. In the course of two days, several artists have been on stage in Gjerdum culture house, recording the TV-show, which was broadcast a few days later on NRK1. The culture house was the place that served as a command centre for all the emergency services in the first days after the tragic landslide that killed 10 people on the night of 30. December 2020.

Alexander Rybak is well known in Gjerdrum and has several times stayed at the house of the memorial concert’s musical director, Knut-Bjørnar Asphol.
– It is completely natural to be part of this. For me, Gjerdrum has been a safe base I can come to and live in for periods. Therefore, it is very strange to see a place that has been safe for me, become insecure. The song I have made is an attempt to get the safety back, says Alexander Rybak affected by the seriousness of the situation to the newspaper.
In addition to performing his new Norwegian song “Mitt andre hjem” (My Second Home), which was written for the occasion, he also performed together with Rolf Løvland and Maiken Kroken.
Affected by what happened.
Alexander thought it was great to play with other musicians, but at the same time sad.
– We meet because something terrible has happened and everyone is affected by that. But putting away the party melodies, and being allowed to perform music that is different and adapted in this setting is very special, he says.
Rybak highlights the interaction with Rolf Løvland, Knut-Bjørnar and not least Maiken Kroken.
– Maiken is a very versatile musician and therefore it is nice to play with someone who understands every phrase with the heart. I am happy to be allowed to participate in this memorial concert, Rybak concludes.
Met at BBC
It is the first time Maiken Kroken played with Rybak, but she met him 11 years ago at BBC in London during the British national final of ESC where she participated with the girl group The Miss Fitz and Alexander performed in the interval act
