A big ESC gig, 50 million video views and luck in love
Alexander Rybak: “It’s heaven to have a girlfriend I can spar with”
It has apparently been a bit quiet around Alexander Rybak for a while. Apparently.

In fact, there is very much going on around the high-profile man from Oksval. However a lot of it takes place in Eastern Europe – plus the Norwegian press are focusing on other objects at the moment.
But Rybak is on the move: In Eastern Europe, the video of his first Russian song “Kotik” (kitten) has reached more than fifty million views. And the music book for kids from last year, Trolle and the Magic Fiddle, has soon sold out its third edition, and also received 150,000 NOK for the development of a Trolle game for iPhone.
Last year he also celebrated his tenth anniversary as an artist.
He travels to London soon to participate in BBC2’s big TV-show for Eurovision at Hammersmith Eventim Apollo. In the show “Eurovision, You Decide” the viewers shall vote for the song that will represent Britain in the Eurovision final in Kiev. The show’s star is the 30 year old from Nesodden.
He is not travelling alone. There will be a few extra days in London together with the 22 year old lady who has been his great joy over the last year, Julie Gaarud Holm.
– It’s heaven to have a girlfriend you can spar with, he says. After 54 Christmas concerts with “Stille Natt Hellige Natt”, he celebrated a quiet Christmas together with her at home in Nesodden. Last week he was on a New Year tour with the TrondheimSolistene.
A versatile man
Rybak’s latest song, “Return”, is inspired by his own soundtrack of DreamWork’s movie “How to Train Your Dragon 2”. He made the lyrics and music, sings and plays everything himself, including using the back side of his fiddle as rhythm instrument.
Even if the schedule is still busy, something is different.
– Earlier I had skyrocketing ambitions, almost arrogant. It was necessary to achieve all the successes in Eastern Europe, and perform well in shows like “Hver gang vi møtes” (Every time we meet) “En hyllest til Jahn Teigen” (A Tribute to Jahn Teigen) and such, says Rybak – who when we portrayed him a couple of years ago, called himself a “champion of versatility.”
– Now the ambitions are more realistic, but I carry out everything I plan.
